Do Something, Anything, Even If It Does Not Solve The Problem.

FILE - In this Jan. 16, 2013, file photo, President Barack Obama listens at left as Vice President Joe Biden speaks about proposals to reduce gun violence in the South Court Auditorium at the White House in Washington. There is a legal avenue to get any gun you want somewhere in the U.S., thanks to the maze of gun statutes across the country and the lack of federal laws. An Associated Press analysis finds that there are thousands of laws, rules and regulations at the local, county, state and federal levels. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster, File)
After you turn in your guns we are headed to the beach
to command the oceans to stop rising.
"Because while there is no law or set of laws that can prevent every senseless act of violence completely, no piece of legislation that will prevent every tragedy, every act of evil, if there’s even one thing we can do to reduce this violence, if there’s even one life that can be saved, then we’ve got an obligation to try." - President Obama

The false premise in the President's statement is that laws can prevent some actions or any action from occurring.

Laws are written for two reasons. The first is that when individuals enter into an agreement with the state to not seek personal vengeance against another individual who has committed a crime against them the state then has the responsibility to punish the transgressor on behalf of the victim. The benefit to the victim and to the state is that communities are not torn apart by an endless series of blood feuds. The second reason laws are written is to provide a consistent rule concerning the type of punishment for the type of crime committed.

Laws are reactive not proactive. The law can only be applied to a specific crime that has been committed against a specific individual.  The only way to eliminate the crime of bank robbery would be for the state to declare bank robbery will no longer be a crime.

There is a greater danger to the nation when we demand action and our elected representatives  are more than willing to take the action that we demand. I am not speaking solely about the issue of the individual right to own firearms.

"We must here return for a moment to the position which precedes the suppression of democratic institutions and the creation of a totalitarian regime. In this stage it is the general demand for quick and determined government action that is the dominating element in the situation, dissatisfaction with the slow and cumbersome course of democratic procedure which makes action for action's sake the goal." - F. A. Hayek, The Road To Serfdom - Chapter 10, Why The Worst Get On Top.
