Faithless America and Faithless In Public Life

George Soros has no problems finding useful idiots
Beware of academicians presenting petitions.

PJ O'Rourke wrote a book titled Enemies List. He wrote that any group that began with; "Friends of" should be placed on the enemies list.

I keep my own list concerning Catholics that have formed organizations that include the words in the titles of their organizations such as; common good, choice, alliance, reporter, worker justice, social justice, and nuns on the bus, or nuns on any other form of transport, etc. I can now add the word  faith, as in Faithful America and Faith in Public Life.

Faithful America submitted a letter signed by the usual suspects from the usual so called Catholic institutions of higher learning condemning Catholic University of America for accepting a donation from the Koch Brothers. 15 of the signatories seem to be unaware that the their institutions of higher learning also have accepted donations from the Koch brothers.

Memory lapses of this group also include the fact that their group, or in this case parent group, Faith in Public Life is also funded by George Soros, committed atheist, and enemy of the fundamental teachings of the Catholic Church. These would be popes and pope-ettes would be wise to enslave a graduate student to do some basic research before signing any letters concerning the decisions of a university or college that had the wisdom not to employ them.

Black Friday

Anyone who is a Black Friday shopper will tell you that the photo on the left was not of the police dealing with unruly shoppers on Black Friday.

The avid shopper will be quick to point out that it is a police officer in the photo using pepper spray. On Black Friday it is your fellow shoppers that use pepper spray to clear a path to that must have item.

To prepare for that Black Friday shopping experience I suggest you visit your nearest law enforcement supply store, or your closest Army and Navy Surplus store. Please dress appropriately and leave the kiddies at home.

The photo on the right depicts what the well dressed and well prepared shopper should wear on Black Friday. Formal, yet functional, and of course dressing in black always gives one a slimmer appearance.

Thanksgiving with the family is overrated for shoppers. Nothing prepares one for Christmas like spending Thanksgiving Day with thousands of complete strangers, throwing elbows and getting that feeling of accomplishment one gets from getting a bargain, or snatching a bargain out of someone’s hands. After all it is survival of the fittest and fastest.

Thanksgiving with the family is overrated for retail employees. After all it is probably the only day of the year that they will get an eight hour shift. Many retail employees are lucky if they are getting eight hours of work per week. I know one who is getting one four hour shift every two weeks.

Christmas Day will be the next holiday to disappear. I suppose the upside will be that a retail employee will get two eight hour shifts within a twelve month period.

Someone save me a slice of Thanksgiving pizza.

Colorado Where The Living Is Easy, And The Women Are Too

These ads are not parodies. "The ads were commissioned by Colorado Consumer Health Initiative and ProgressNow Colorado Education, targeting younger generations to join the Affordable Care Act's healthcare exchanges." - CNA

Truck rental companies have announced that they have a shortage of small trucks and trailers due to a large number of one way rentals heading for the State of Colorado.

Hundreds of thousands of twenty something males, some of whom have not been seen since graduating from high school are emerging from their parents basements and are heading to Colorado.

Pizza delivery drivers and video game rental companies outside Colorado have been financially devastated. There is also a glut of homes with basements for sale outside of Colorado, although the U.S. Postal Service has expressed concern that parents that have sold these homes have not been filing change of address forms.

“I will not say, do not weep, for not all tears are an evil.” - JRR Tolkien

  courtesy of Beth Nakamura/The Oregonian
There is a paradox in the premise of some historians that the Dark Ages were harsh and brutal and that the Renaissance, or as some call it the Enlightenment were beneficial and rational.

During World War II over 60 million people lost their lives. It would seem that the children of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment received a dubious benefit as well as a deficit of rational thought.

Every generation believes that it is more enlightened than the last and has stood one more rung higher on the ladder of truth. If one believes that truth is relative, or subjective then the ladder does not exist, nor are there any rungs to stand on.

Some equate rational thought with the scientific method. Now science has certainly provided man with the ability to cure disease and other benefits, but it also provided man with the ability to destroy thousands of human beings with one bomb. The scientific method may require rational thought but it does not necessarily inspire rational action.

There is one thing that every generation has shared and that is grief. Japanese citizens are remembering those that lost their lives in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

I am not going to debate the wisdom of the bombings. I am not going to listen to the political speeches. I am not going to listen to those that try to mitigate sin by pointing out the sins of others. I am going to remember all those individuals that lost their lives in a horrific war regardless of their country.

Birth Certificate Search Moves From Kenya to Italy

Si tratta di una cospirazione?

There seems to be a resemblance

There seems to be a resemblance

Italian newspapers have pushed football onto the backpages and are reporting that anonymous sources have said that the US Embassy has "uomini in nero", men in black suits, with ear pieces that are searching state archives for a birth certificate.

There has been no comment from the US State Department or the White House. Vice President Biden commented that "there is no possibility that President Obama could be part of the Mussolini family, if he was Amtrak would always run on time."

The Running Of The Pit Bulls

Loyalists confront police in Northern Ireland

It is the Marching Season in Northern Ireland. The Orange Lodges try to march through Catholic neighborhoods, or as close as they can get so they can hurl bottles and petrol bombs at Catholics, and Catholics try to hurl bricks and petrol bombs at the Protestants. The police are in the middle trying to avoid missiles coming from both sides. Reminds me of dodge ball in the gym on rainy days, anyway you get the picture.

Now while this goes on in Ireland The Running of the Bulls goes on in Pamplona. Bulls don't really care if you are Protestant or Catholic. If you're in the way on the way to the bullring you better keep moving, anything on two legs is the enemy. Bulls unlike human beings could care less where you worship.

Bull Having Fun

So I love tradition but I think it is time to update the Marching Season. The Spanish Armada plan did not work out well for the Spanish, but I think we could mix some traditions here. Think of it as a cultural cocktail rather than a Molotov Cocktail.

The Running of the Pit Bulls. Turn 40 or so Pit Bulls loose as the marchers get close to the Catholic neighborhoods. The Orangemen will quicken the pace, no time for throwing dangerous objects whether Catholic or Protestant. The police will be entertained rather than assaulted. History will be served with English celebration, Spanish tradition, and a little American innovation.

Where Is That Village?

Someone once said it takes a village to raise a child. It appears that a village can also destroy a child.

The Zimmerman trial is over, well maybe it is over. Some in the village are outraged at the not guilty verdict and some are pleased. The village appears to be schizophrenic.

I'm trying to find that village in the photograph. It seems to look quiet and best of all deserted. I don't dislike all individuals but then again I am not in love with the concept of the collective conscience.

The collective view of humanity is very attractive to our culture. I am a cynic because when I see a collective group of human beings I see a mob. Mobs tend to be brutish and and of course there is no such thing as a collective consience. Mobs impose their will through force, and if you are not a member of the proverbial village the mob will attempt to destroy you.

The village I live in now is pretty brutal. The village I live in now has murdered at least 48,932,474 children, and yet the villagers rail against violence. The village I live in now sells violence on the movie screen, televison, video games, and music, yet the villagers are willing to give their rapt attention to some musician or actor that speaks out against violence.

The village in the photo appears to be empty from the outside, unfortunately in my village it is many of the villagers that are empty on the inside.

Guess Who's Coming To Dinner

Chen Guangcheng
"Because you're not what I would have you be, I blind myself to who, in truth, you are." - Madeleine L'Engle

A dissident can be like that relative everyone agonizes over when the invitation list is being drawn up for that holiday dinner or family barbecue. Their behavior at one family function might be beyond reproach on one occasion and a total disaster on another.

Every family has one of those relatives. You spend months working on the lawn for that 4th of July family picnic and as everyone compliments you on how nice the yard looks Uncle Fred reminds you of your social obligation to compost your yard debris, eggshells, and food scraps, and then goes on to lecture you on the science of the evils to come by using a gas powered lawnmower. You see a fairway at The Masters, Uncle Fred sees Death Valley.

Chen Guangcheng has worn out his welcome at New York University and I think I know why the administration at NYU waits in breathless anticipation for the day that his visa expires and he is on the way back to China.

"Chen Guangcheng (born 12 November 1971) is a Chinese civil rights activist who worked on human rights issues in rural areas of the People's Republic of China. Blind from an early age and self-taught in the law, Chen is frequently described as a "barefoot lawyer" who advocates for women's rights, land rights, and the welfare of the poor. He is best known for exposing abuses in official family-planning practices, often involving claims of violence and forced abortions." - from Wikipedia

The last thing any institution of higher learning needs is a self educated individual on campus that will conduct lectures and seminars for their students. Universities and colleges tend to be outspoken on the merits of socialism in the classroom or the lecture hall, but when it comes to tuition and fees they seem to be admirers of the classic robber barons.
One doesn't invite a college dropout like Bill Gates of Microsoft fame to a college campus to teach a business course. A Bill Gates is offered an honorary degree in the hopes that he brings a suitcase full of cash to the commencement ceremony and then gives a speech to graduates who in turn will be offering their own suitcases filled with cash for years to come to pay off their student loans.

Unfortunately for Chen he did not come to NYU with a suitcase full of cash. What he brings to NYU is a living example of courage. Blindness imposes a certain amount of isolation. Speaking out against evil and not being able to see the jailers punch coming tells me that Chen sees far more than we see.

"10,000 people just melt away."

"You can hire 10,000 people for 10 to 15 minutes," says Gigwalk CEO Bob Bahramipour. "When they're done, those 10,000 people just melt away."

The new normal for a citizen of the United States is the financial and political destruction of the middle class. Socialists, or as in the case of the United States the establishment of that branch of socialism known as corporate fascism is the goal of President Obama and the Democrat Party. Unfortunately some Republicans have now adopted the Pontius Pilate philosophy of political action. They stand at the basin and continually wash their hands, after all if you are in the middle class the least your elected representatives should is clean their hands before placing them in your pockets before removing your wallet.

The news several weeks ago that the Obama administration has delayed the requirements for businesses to to comply with the Obamacare mandate to provide health care if they employ 50 or more people will not change the fact that the United States is on the road to economic Hell. The requirement for individuals to have a health care policy has not been delayed. The middle and lower middle class do not have a voice in the halls of power. Republicans and Democrats alike are wined and dined by big business and big labor. Small businesses and the individual worker are the 10,000 people that are just going to melt away.

Socialists whether they wish to admit or not are class warfare warriors. Socialists know they cannot make everyone wealthy, for to do that means encouraging the private sector and entrepreneurial capitalism, the very things that the socialist despises.Socialist party members do tend to make an exception for themselves in the quest to accumulate wealth. The answer than becomes to pursue policies that will make everyone poorer. If everyone is poor then every man is equal, at least as far as misery is concerned.

Big business tends to support corporate fascism because it destroys competition. Apple, Microsoft, General Electric, & Wal-Mart, to name just a few can afford the lawyers to navigate government rules and regulations. Not only can socialism allow them to crush their competitors, but they can lobby the government to determine which products will be made available to the consumer, and lobby for government subsidies to produce products such as specialized light bulbs, wind turbines, and solar panels. It does not matter if the product is beneficial to the consumer. The consumer not only will have to purchase this product but subsidize it through fees and taxes.

Big business is not going to hire permanent workers. Big business is going to hire temporary workers that will simply melt away. So much for the theory that someone else is going to pay for your health care.

When income tax revenues drop due to the rise in temporary employment, which in turn means a rise in full time unemployment, local, state, and the federal governments will not stop spending. They will raise taxes to cover their new budget shortfalls. The socialist will state that we must tax the surviving corporate giants. What the socialist fails to realize is that individuals pay taxes, corporations do not. The price of goods and services will increase to cover the cost of any new taxes.

The downward spiral will continue for the new underclass. The irony is socialism creates the very thing it is trying to destroy. Socialism creates a class of wealthy elites and destroys the middle class.

The following quote is from Rerum Novarum, Encyclical Letter on the Condition of the Working Classes
His Holiness Pope Leo XIII
May 15, 1891

9. Clearly the essential reason why those who engage in any gainful occupation undertake labor, and at the same time the end to which workers immediately look, is to procure property for themselves and to retain it by individual right as theirs and as their very own. When the worker places his energy and his labor at the disposal of another, he does so for the purpose of getting the means necessary for livelihood. He seeks in return for the work done, accordingly, a true and full right not only to demand his wage but to dispose of it as he sees fit. Therefore, if he saves something by restricting expenditures and invests his savings in a piece of land in order to keep the fruit of his thrift more safe, a holding of this kind is certainly nothing else than his wage under a different form; and on this account land which the worker thus buys is necessarily under his full control as much as the wage which he earned by his labor. But, as is obvious, it is clearly in this that the ownership of movable and immovable goods consists. Therefore, inasmuch as the Socialists seek to transfer the goods of private persons to the community at large, they make the lot of all wage earners worse, because in abolishing the freedom to dispose of wages they take away from them by this very act the hope and the opportunity of increasing their property and of securing advantages for themselves.

''You just can't trust those damn Catholics on a Thursday or a Friday",- Gordon Gee

Untrustworthy Catholics on a Saturday afternoon
Mr. Gee some schools would also say that "those damn Catholics" cannot be trusted on Saturday afternoons in the Fall.

Gordon Gee is the President of Ohio State University.

''The fathers are holy on Sunday, and they're holy hell on the rest of the week,'' Gee said to laughter at the Dec. 5 meeting attended by Athletic Director Gene Smith, several other athletic department members, professors and students.
''You just can't trust those damn Catholics on a Thursday or a Friday, and so, literally, I can say that,'' said Gee, a Mormon.
The Big Ten had for years courted Notre Dame, but the school resisted as it sought to retain its independent status in college football. In September, the school announced that it would join the Atlantic Coast Conference in all sports except football and hockey but would play five football games each year against ACC teams.
In the recording, Gee referred specifically to dealing with the Rev. Ned Joyce, Notre Dame's longtime executive vice president, who died in 2004.
''Father Joyce was one of those people who ran the university for many, many years,'' Gee said.
Gee said the Atlantic Coast Conference added Notre Dame at a time when it was feeling vulnerable.
''Notre Dame wanted to have its cake and eat it, too,'' Gee said, according to the recording and a copy of the meeting's minutes. - By ANDREW WELSH-HUGGINS (AP Legal Affairs Writer)  The Associated Press

Father Jenkins of Notre Dame has accepted Mr. Gee's apology concerning his remarks about the late Father Joyce, and Notre Dame.

I do not find Mr. Gee's remarks particularly upsetting as a Catholic. In fact there is some sweet irony in his complaint about Notre Dame not joining the Big Ten.

In 1926 Notre Dame applied for membership in what would become the Big Ten as we know it today. Notre Dame was refused admission for several reasons, such as disdain for Catholic higher education, anti-Catholic bigotry, and the accusation that Notre Dame did not have control of its' football program.

Director of Athletics for Michigan, Fielding Yost was the chief architect of denying Notre Dame admission to the Big Ten. Coach Yost was far more serious in his anti-Catholicism than Mr. Gee.

"Notre Dame’s first win against Michigan came in 1909, a win that caused the Detroit Free Press to write “Eleven Fighting Irishmen wrecked the Yost machine this afternoon. Three sons of Erin, individually and collectively representing the University of Notre Dame, not only beat the Michigan team, but dashed some of Michigan’s greatest hopes and shattered Michigan’s fairest dreams.” Yost, ever gracious in defeat, cancelled the next year’s game and then refused to schedule Notre Dame for the rest of his career at Michigan. Which meant that Notre Dame didn’t play Michigan again until 1942, when Yost was gone and Elmer Layden and wartime restrictions put the local rivals together once more." - Her Loyal Sons blog

The Holy Cross fathers had to battle with Knute Rockne on many occasions but they had more control over the Notre Dame football program than Big Ten members had over their football programs in the twenties. This is still true today.

Murray Sperber has written an excellent book titled Shake Down The Thunder The Creation Of Notre Dame Football. This is not a book that simply details glorious wins and heartbreaking losses. Mr. Sperber was given complete access to Notre Dame archives and it is a history of the good and bad of college football in general, and Notre Dame in particular. Murray Sperber is a professor from Indiana University.

Notre Dame has a national following. Coach Yost of Michigan in his attempt to kill the Notre Dame football program only made it stronger. Whether your team belongs to the Pac 12, Big Ten, ACC, SEC, or name your conference, you only have a regional rivalry. Alums gathering at sports bars around the nation to watch a sattelite feed of their alma mater does not constitute a national following. Notre Dame is either loved or hated, but ESPN, NBC, CBS, and ABC love televising Notre Dame football. They all know that both the Notre Doters, and the haters will be watching.

What really upsets Mr. Gee and The Big Ten is that they need the national exposure and the revenue that Notre Dame could bring to the Big Ten. The statement that Mr. Gee made that; ''Notre Dame wanted to have its cake and eat it, too,''  would have been much funnier if he had said; we want Notre Dame's cake and we want to it eat too.

Good night Columbus.

The Coming Storm

That looks like a European wave
Here comes the wave update - see link below.

"Is Walmart Cutting Costs With Temp Workers?" -from The Wall Street Journal Cheat Sheet

"Walmart has also begun to change its healthcare plans ahead of Obama’s impending healthcare changes. Soon, part-time workers will need to work a minimum of 30 hours a week rather than 24 hours before qualifying for health insurance (with the healthcare reforms, large companies have to offer 95 percent of employees who work more than 30 hours a week or pay a $2,000 per worker penalty for the entire workforce). For workers with varying work schedules, like Walmart’s temporary workers, companies may elect to monitor eligibility over the course of a year meaning uncertainty over work hours and health coverage." - Thomas Mentel June 16, 2013

Just like the Coast Guard rescue boat that is facing a 20 foot wave in the photo so too will be millions of Americans as the wave of Obamacare is about to come crashing down on them.

I have a friend, a former classmate, who is in a management position for a multinational company that has employees across the United States. I am not fond of the use of anonymous sources, but I am not going to reveal his name or the name of the company.

A few days ago he told me that he was involved in a conference call with other managers and officials from their corporate headquarters. Managers were told to cut employee hours to 30 hours or less per week. The cut in hours comes so that the corporation will only have to provide health care to one or two employees in each local office. Local managers were also told that they were not to use the phrase Obamacare. They were to use the phrase The Affordable American Health Care Act.

To his credit he worried about those employees who were going to lose at least 40 hours or more of pay each month. He understands that the loss of income will mean these employees could lose their homes or apartments, be unable to pay bills, and be at the mercy of IRS enforcers because private health care plans will be unaffordable for part time workers.

This loss of hours for employees will be the new normal all over the United States. Companies across the United States will be slashing hours, or laying off employees just to survive financially.

The second wave that will come crashing down on Americans is that the price of goods and services will rise to cover health care costs. The employee who has had his/her hours slashed, or worse lost their job due to Obamacare will become poorer once again.

This is is the result of we have to pass the bill before we can know what's in in the bill. Thanks Nancy Pelosi, we are all Greeks now.

We Are Not Fascists, By The Way Where Is That List Of Your Favorite Books That We Asked For?

Hon. Douglas H. Shulman

Commissioner

Internal Revenue Service

Room 3000 IR

1111 Constitution Avenue, N.W.

Dear Comrade Shulman:

It has come to our attention that people have formed organizations that are promoting dangerous ideas. Ideas that the people have the right to assemble, and to express political ideas that disagree with us, their political masters,...oops we meant elected leaders, you get the idea. What is more these people are actually receiving donations to help spread their message, tax deductible donations.

This nonsense must stop. The next thing you know they will be reading books, and worst of all actually reading the Bill of Rights, The Declaration of Independence, and the U.S. Constitution. You must put a stop to this before enough people start to believe that some of us should be removed from office. Pandering to special interests is hard work and we have worked very hard if you know what we mean to stay in office.

Signed: A Concerned Group of U.S. Senators.

P.S. Some of us and our staffers would like you to slow down on the collection letters concerning our unpaid taxes.

I Don't Know

Attorney General Eric " I don't know" Holder
courtesy of NPR
I am one of those individuals that pile up the mail that needs to be shredded until every square inch of the desk is covered with offers I cannot refuse, offers that come with my name and address in these letters. You know the ones, credit card offers, time share offers, and old bills, etc, etc.

I have spent the last few days shredding old mail. So far I have filled four grocery bags with shredded paper and there is more shredding to be done. I am getting pretty good at feeding the shredder, in fact I'm surprised that  the Department of Justice has not offered me a job.

I have found some time to watch Attorney General Eric Holder fielding questions from Congressional committees. Mr. Holder seems to be very consistent in his answers, in fact I should say answer. The answer to most of the questions seems to be, " I don't know". To be fair an "I am not aware of this" is an occasional response.

As I was feeding paper into the shredder I began to wonder what Mr. Holder did all day long at the office. Did staff meetings begin with the Attorney General asking for updates on DOJ investigations. As far as I can tell the responses must have been, "there is nothing to report sir." When staffers met with the Attorney General to prep him for Congressional hearings did they hand him two sheets of paper? Printed on one sheet was the phrase " I don't know", on the second sheet the phrase " I am not aware of that.

My answer to the question; What does Mr. Holder do all day long at the office? I don't know.

A Table For 500,000 Please

Dear Cardinal Dolan

Approximately 500,000 people attended the 2013 March for Life. Most of whom are Catholic, with a big C.

I have no idea how many Catholics attended the Al Smith Dinner. I do know that there were some of what I call the small c catholics there.

The March for Life attendees are those Catholics that are the backbone of the Church. They save their money to travel and attend the march against the intrinsic evil of abortion. They stand in front of abortion clinics and pray the Rosary. They defend the Church in spite of disappointments and scandal. They are faithful.

Your Eminence I know you have a sense of humor, so let me just say two, four, six, eight, it is time to excommunicate. The following individuals have divided the Church with their pro-abortion beliefs, and their actions as legislators; Governor Cuomo, Rudy Giuliani, Nancy Pelosi, Joe Biden, Kathleen Sebelius, and there are many more that are not in public office. These individuals need the chance to reflect on the grave sin of abortion for they are in peril of spending eternity in Hell. As you well know nobody wants to go to Hell alone so these same individuals are putting other Catholics on the same path they are walking. I believe it is called scandal.

I think the Al Smith Dinner is just fine, but right now I would rather break bread with the 500,000.

Sincerely Yours
A poor sinner, but a work in progress

There Is Conviction, And Then There Is Conviction On May 13th

Hail Holy Queen,
Mother of mercy,
Our life, our sweetness, and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.
To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping
In this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate,
Thine eyes of mercy towards us.
And after this, our exile,
Show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

May 13th is the Feast Day of Our Lady Of Fatima. On May 13th, 1917 the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children at  Fátima, Portugal. The apparitions continued on the thirteenth day for six consecutive months in 1917, ending on October 13th, 1917 with the miracle of the sun. The three children were Lúcia Santos and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto.

On May 13th, 2013 after ten days of deliberation a Philadelphia jury found Dr. Kermit Gosnell guilty of murdering three infants.

Three children in 1917 were chosen to pass on a message to the world about what was going to occur in Europe in the 30's and 40's. A message that warned of the horror and slaughter that would engulf the world. Three children that were murdered by Dr. Gosnell have shown us a world of slaughter and horror that is engulfing the world now.

I started this article with the Salve Regina. I end the article with a quote from Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood. You might want to reread the Salve Regina after reading the Margaret Sanger litany, in fact you might want to read the Salve Regina aloud.

[Slavs, Latin, and Hebrew immigrants are] human weeds ... a deadweight of human waste ... [Blacks, soldiers, and Jews are a] menace to the race.Eugenic sterilization is an urgent need ... We must prevent Multiplication of this bad stock. Margaret Sanger, October 1926 Birth Control Review.

The Belfast mother-of-10 was taken from her flat by the IRA in December 1972.
Ivor Bell, 77, alleged to have been a senior member in the Provisional IRA in the 1970s, was arrested at his home in west Belfast, on Tuesday.
He was refused bail on Saturday after a police officer told the court there was a high risk of him absconding. A solicitor for Mr Bell told Belfast Magistrates Court his client was not involved in the murder of Jean McConville.
He said the case against him was based on the Boston College tapes and "the evidence was not credible". - BBC News, March 22, 2014

The McConville children have a chance at seeing justice done in a case that is decades old. Boston College lost a court case to keep interviews with IRA members from the police. Academics trying to compile an oral history of the Troubles should remember that the voices of the murdered and their children have a right to be heard and to seek justice.

The most compelling voice is that of Michael McConville who was 11 years old and witnessed the kidnapping of his mother. This is what he told he told John Mooney in an interview that was published in The Sunday Times, March 23, 2014.

"The look of terror on his mother’s face has remained etched on his memory for over 40 years. Michael McConville, then aged 11, vividly remembers the night the IRA took his mother. The knock on the door of their home in the Divis flats in west Belfast came at about 6.30pm on December 7, 1972.
“They just barged in when my sister opened the door. Some of them wore masks, others didn’t. They were shouting and screaming,” he said. “I held on to my mother. I think I attached myself to her leg. I was crying, refusing to let go. My mother was in a terrible state. The IRA had taken her the night before and beaten her up. She was terrified. She was crying. I think she probably knew what was going to happen.”
The intruders were local members of the IRA, both men and women. “They tried to calm us down because we were all screaming. My brother Arthur, who was a teenager, said he wanted to go with her. They said OK, and the two of them left, but when Arthur walked down the stairwell of the flats, they put a gun to his head and told him to go home. That was the last we ever saw of her,” McConville recalled.
“I think about it every day. It haunts me. I think she knew what they were going to do. I can still see the terror in her eyes. That look has never left me.”
Jean McConville was 37 and the mother of 10 children. She had been widowed the previous January when her husband Arthur died from cancer. In the months before she was abducted, she had had a series of nervous breakdowns, attempted to take her own life and suffered depression as she tried to cope with her loss and raise 10 children alone.
She is believed to have been interrogated for up to six days until an IRA gunman murdered her with a single shot to the back of the head. Her body was then taken to Shilling Hill beach on the Carlingford peninsula in Co Louth, where she was buried.
The IRA didn’t claim responsibility for the killing. Instead she became one of the Disappeared — paramilitary victims whose bodies were buried in remote bogs south of the border. The McConville family’s ordeal was just beginning.
The IRA returned a week later to take Michael, who had recognised at least three members of the gang: a woman and two men from the local area. The boy was hooded, strapped to a chair and beaten with hurleys in a disused house.
“They held me for three hours. They said that if I said anything about the IRA, they would kill me. They placed a hood over my head, but I could see them through it. They hit me. They fired a cap gun to frighten me and put a knife in my mouth,” he said. “These people were supposed to be protecting our community and this is what they were doing to an 11-year-old boy. I still see them around today. I still won’t make a statement to the police in case they get to my family. The IRA haven’t gone away; people just think they have.”  - John Mooney, The Sunday Times

I hope and pray that the McConville children will find some measure of peace. They deserve to have their story heard.

The original article I wrote on April 24, 2013 is posted below. I have updated the links.

Matthew 19:14
But Jesus said to them: Suffer the little children, and forbid them not to come to me: for the kingdom of heaven is for such.

Whether you are a Catholic, or not, we can probably agree that Jesus was not asking us to send children to Him in pieces, whether from an abortionist's tools, or from nails and ball bearings packed in a container with explosives.

Numbers 14:18
The Lord is patient and full of mercy, taking away iniquity and wickedness, and leaving no man clear, who visitest the sins of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.

There is another way to destroy children without tearing their bodies apart. Old fools who have carefully nursed their bitterness and hatred pass on the darkness in their souls to their children, who in turn become old fools themselves. Generation after generation learn to hate, and some will kill while others will provide support to those who kill in their name. One generation keeps another generation from the kingdom of heaven.

The United States, like every other nation in the world has a history that includes sociopaths who place bombs to kill and maim anyone that are unfortunate enough to be in the vicinity of their bombs.

President Obama has a close personal friend and political ally, Bill Ayers, who is an unrepentant bomber. Mr. Ayers is a specialist in educational theory, and is well respected by the academic establishment.

Who the victim or victims may be is of no consequence to the bombers, just so there are victims is all that matters. The action soon becomes killing and maiming for the self gratification of the actor. For the bomber the intoxicating power of generating fear, and adulation transcends any political, or religious beliefs. There is no difference between the bombers and serial killers. They both kill because they enjoy killing. The bombers use belief to attract people who will admire the bomber and feed the bomber's ego.

When you read the following paragraphs do not assume that I am pointing out that Irish Catholic Boston got what it deserved in the Marathon bombing. I am merely pointing out the never ending cycle of violence that infects the entire world. People become objects, not individuals that have a right to their own lives whether in Ireland, the United States, or any country you choose to name when they play the patriot game. The patriot game is played by people of every color and belief. Take a look at your own beliefs, whether on the right or the left, but remember a just society cannot be built upon a foundation of violence. One sin does not mitigate another sin.

The following quotes comes from a blog titled Periscope that Niall O'Dowd writes for Irish Central.

"In this great country called America two Chechen boys came to live. Their family was fleeing persecution and had been made refugees according to some reports.
Okay, they may have been foreign and had difficulty, a little, with the language, they may have encountered some racism, but hey, they were in America which had accepted their refugee family and they had the same chance as everyone else in a great country.
In thanks they wanted to blow everybody up.
They did kill a beautiful little boy, a wonderful restaurant manager and a Chinese immigrant and wounded 170 others. They also killed an Irish American cop and wounded another one.
Now I want to throw up when people come on the radio as they have been, especially from overseas, saying America doesn’t understand and they essentially deserved what they got, because they - well they don’t like Muslims.
Wrong! We don’t like fanatics of any kind, people who blow up other people because they may not quite fit in."

I hope that Mr. O'Dowd is including IRA bombers in the last sentence that I have quoted from his blog.

The following quotes come from an article written by Cahir O'Doherty, published by Irish Central on April 19th 2013.

"On Monday the U.S. Supreme Court rejected an appeal to keep secret interviews with former Irish Republican Army members from being turned over to police authorities in Northern Ireland.
The court’s move leaves in place a lower court ruling ordering Boston College to give the Justice Department portions of interviews recorded with convicted IRA car bomber Dolours Price.

Dolours Price believed that the Peace Accords were a betrayal of the IRA. This is one more indication that violence for the sake of violence becomes the real goal. Like the drug addict chasing that first high the bomber seeks even more violence to satisfy their desire to kill.

Price, 61, who died in January, was interviewed with other former IRA members between 2001 and 2006 as part of the Belfast Project, a Boston College oral history study that was created to be a resource for journalists, scholars and historians studying The Troubles.
But now federal officials want to forward the secret recordings to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), who are investigating the IRA’s 1972 killing of Belfast widow Jean McConville.

Jean McConville was the mother of ten children. One of her sons was involved with the IRA. She was suspected of being an informer. When she was kidnapped I believe her youngest child was approximately six years old. She was a Catholic convert. Dolours Price was the driver for the kidnap team. Jean McConville was probably tortured for six days and then shot in the back of the head. She was buried on a beach in the Republic Ireland.

Researchers Ed Moloney and Anthony McIntyre, who had assured their subjects that their interviews would remain secret until after their deaths, are now arguing that the participants’ lives could be endangered if their identities are publicly revealed because they could potentially be branded as informers."

We know what happens to informers. The Republic of Ireland still has plenty of beaches.

Brendan Moore, the National President of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, told the Irish Voice, “It’s obviously an egregious application of the MLAT. It’s undermining academic enquiry in this country. Clearly it’s also a fishing expedition on the part of the PSNI. They’re looking for people to be implicated. It’s also most unfortunate in terms of international relations. I think we are all under threat if treaties are going to be twisted in this way.”

With all due respect to Mr. Moore denying justice to victims of terrorists just moves the cycle of violence forward. I hope Boston College will also interview the bombing victims, as well as the children of Jean McConville. The police have an obligation to investigate and speak for the dead victims of the terrorists.

The Hermit Kingdom and Useful Idiot Tourism

Courtesy of Mercy Corps.
"Relief managers from Portland-based Mercy Corps say U.S. let North Koreans starve as retribution for missile launch"

"A 3-year-old girl weighed less than 16 pounds, surviving on saline solution and ground rice. Babies lay passively, too weak to cry. Relief workers saw stunted and wasted children languishing in unheated hospitals amid floods and reduced rations during an unusually harsh winter."

"That was two years ago. Portland-based Mercy Corps and four other humanitarian organizations given rare access to North Korea warned: "a catastrophic situation is developing." After a year of prodding, the U.S. Agency for International Development announced 120,000 metric tons of food for North Korea. " - By Richard Read, The Oregonian

I empathize with the frustrations and the concerns of the staff of Mercy Corps. Unlike tourists, celebrities, and athletes that have visited North Korea they have personally witnessed what the tourist cannot photograph. Mercy Corps has a laser like focus on feeding North Korean children and they are correct in the their belief that food should not be used as a diplomatic tool or weapon to influence the Dear Leader. The Dear Leader Kim Jong-Un and his closest supporters appear not to have missed many meals.

Mercy Corps knows that withholding food will not affect the party elite. They will eat, and eat well I might add, no matter how much food aid is withheld. I would remind Mercy Corps that their criticism should be tempered if not publicly, at least privately that if Kim Jong-Un is willing to starve and brutalize his own people we should expect that if given the opportunity he would treat anyone outside his borders no differently.

Tourists still visit the Hermit Kingdom. The Harlem Globetrotters and Dennis Rodman were wined and dined by the Dear Leader and Mr. Rodman was suitably impressed by Kim Jong-Un. Just recently runners from around the world ran in the Pyongyang Marathon. Who knew that running can generate enough endorphins to quiet conscience. Tour groups are taken to the North Korean side of the DMZ and visit a collective farm. They listen to the "party line" of their guides and when they get back home tell the rest of us how everything seems so peaceful.

Although I have not visited North Korea please do not show me your photographs. Mercy Corps has already taken the photos that everyone needs to see. I do not like to think of myself as an angry person, but do not show me a picture of any buffet at some welcome party given to honor your visit. Although unlike you I have not visited the fence that divides North and South Korea. If you have photos of thousands of South Koreans climbing and crawling through the wire to become a citizen of the socialist workers paradise I would be willing to look at those photos.

All in all I hope you had a great time during your visit.

One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them

Warner Bros. Claims Tolkien Estate Breached 'Hobbit' Contract (Exclusive)

"The studio alleges that repudiation of online game rights not only cost it millions of dollars but also decreased exposure for "Hobbit" films."

"Warner Bros. is going after the estate of author J.R.R. Tolkien hard in litigation over online slot machines and games tied to the lucrative Lord of the Rings and Hobbit properties." - from the Hollywood Reporter

The One Ring in Hollywood is the ring of the cash register. Who knew that all Sauron really needed was a lawyer. He should have filed a lawsuit demanding that Frodo return the ring and we would be left with hundreds of pages of legal briefs to ponder. Sauron was a piker compared to a lawyer when it comes to torment and despair.

Perhaps JRR Tolkein should have changed his poem;

One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Vegas where the Casinos lie.
"Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them

In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie."

New York City's Most Not Wanted Poster

The NYC Most Not Wanted Toddler Poster
The government of New York City is on the hunt for terrorists, tiny terrorists. Not Wanted posters have been displayed in subways and bus shelters.

Mayor Bloomberg has come to the conclusion that Planned Parenthood is losing the the fight on toddler terror. Abortion doctors are suffering from PTSD, Post Toddler Survivor Disorder.

These doctors have done their best to stem the tide. They have fought the good fight. In New York state 33 percent of all pregnancies end in abortion, in New York City it's 40 percent, and as high as 70 percent in some communities. These doctors are tired, New Yorkers they need your help.

Mayor Bloomberg Not Wanted posters are not enough. It is time to remove 32 ounce tippy cups from store shelves.  It is time for you to go to the President and request drones. We must have drones flying over every playground, school, and park. New Yorkers have suffered enough from these tiny menaces.

Hey Your Golf Instructor Is On The Phone

Don't worry I'm not using a ball
Like all week-end golfers I have played the occasional round of golf that brings you back to the course with delusions of grandeur only to be humbled before making the turn to complete the back nine.

I remember taking lessons and at the end of my final lesson my golf instructor said to me, stay off the course for two weeks, and then quit. If that wasn't enough he also advised me not to use my name and golf in the same sentence.

Then one day on the course I had an epiphany. My problem was that I was using a golf ball from tee to green. I stepped onto the next tee sans golf ball and hit a magnificent drive. I watched the imaginary ball turn from right to left and found myself twenty five yards from the green. I played my second shot and my imaginary ball with imaginary side spin came to rest two inches from the cup.

My problem all along had been those silly rules of the game that said I must use a golf ball. Every round is now a joy, and yes I know that you are going to say that I'm not really playing golf. I don't care, it's my happiness that matters, not some silly rule that states that a ball is part of the game. If I say it is golf it is golf.

Paul Elie, a senior fellow in the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and World Affairs at Georgetown wrote an op-ed piece for the New York Times titled Give Up Your Pew for Lent.

"At 8 p.m. last night in Vatican City, Benedict XVI resigned the papacy. Now American Catholics should consider resigning too."

"The conventional wisdom has it that Benedict’s resignation sharply reduced the aura of the papal office, showed a tender realism about old age, and made clear that even ancient Catholic practices could be changed. That is all true, but the event’s significance is more visceral than that. It has caught the mood of the church, especially in North America."

"So if the pope can resign, we can, too. We should give up Catholicism en masse, if only for a time."

Pope Benedict XVI has decided that he can no longer carry out the duties of his office, but he is not leaving the Church. If Mr. Elie decided for whatever reason he could no longer carry out the duties of a senior fellow at Georgetown and tendered his resignation he would still belong to the Church.

"In traditional parlance, Benedict’s resignation leaves the Chair of St. Peter “vacant.” So I propose that American Catholics vacate the pews this weekend.
We should seize this opportunity to ask what is true in our faith, what it costs us in obfuscation and moral compromise, and what its telos, or end purpose, really is. And we should explore other religious traditions, which we understand poorly."

Rather than vacate the pews Catholics who are struggling with their faith might want to spend more time in the pews. Mr. Elie who teaches and lectures at a Jesuit university should take another look at The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius.

The Church does not ask us to compromise our morals. There are of course sinners in the Church, but Mr. Elie might be forgetting that human beings sin, whether they are Catholic, Jewish, Quaker, Moslem, or Protestant.

I would suggest that Mr. Elie read the book Goodbye, Good Men. When one speaks of moral compromise and obfuscation this book makes it very clear what moral compromise and obfuscation has cost the Catholic Church.

The Catholic Church is still the Church Militant, not the Church Triumphant, and there are orthodox Catholics that do not understand this distinction, as well as those that are on the road to heresy. As far as the end purpose of the Church, it is to unite as many human beings as possible with God and Jesus Christ in eternity.

"A temporary resignation would be a fitting Lenten observance. It would help believers to purify and deepen our faith in the light of our neighbors’ — “to examine our own religious notions, to sound them for genuineness,” as the American writer Flannery O’Connor put it. It would let us begin to figure out what in Catholicism we can take and what we can and ought to leave."

Catholics who are struggling with their faith, who have doubts would be better off reading Mother Theresa. Mother Theresa labored on in spite of doubt, or what one could call the dark night of the soul. Mother Theresa may not be very popular at so called Catholic institutions because her stand on abortion is probably too uncomfortable for many of the seekers of spiritual enlightenment. After all it is all about me, and what makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

One can remove the crucifix from classrooms for fear of offending a non-Catholic, or they can remove them from the sight of Catholics who need to forget that there is more to life than the warm fuzzies. I'll give Georgetown the benefit of the doubt, perhaps they were removed from classrooms in the hope that Christ would not have to witness what goes on at Georgetown.

Catholicism is like playing golf with a golf ball. There are times when the game is easy, and there are times when the game is a struggle. Sometimes I am a good golfer, and sometimes I am a poor golfer. When you play golf and hit a bad shot you should always remember, you held the club and it was your swing when you played the shot. The one thing I know that will not help my game is a Unitarian golf instructor.

"Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun."- Mao Zedong

"That rifle on the wall of the labourer's cottage or working class flat is the symbol of democracy. It is our job to see that it stays there." - George Orwell 1941.

British citizens have lost their rights to firearm ownership. They should have paid more attention to Mr. Orwell, although to be fair the Magna Carta was designed to protect the lessor nobles from the Monarch, unlike the U.S. Constitution which is
more concerned with the rights of all citizens.

There is a tendency for some of those that support a citizen's right to own a firearm to use the phrase "gun rights". Guns do not have rights in the United States, you as an individual have rights. Your right to own a firearm is stated in the 2nd Amendment.

There are some 2nd Amendment supporters who try to mollify the anti-gun ownership crowd by extolling the virtues of target shooting, this makes no difference to the gun control crowd. Let's be honest, a firearm is designed to kill or maim another human being. A firearm is designed to end a threat to your life, or your family's lives without having to swing a baseball bat like a Viking Berserker, or to emulate Zorro with that cutlery set you keep in the knife block on the kitchen counter.

There are some bishops that are calling gun ownership a social justice concern. They are correct, but not in the way they might think. I hope they reread the following passages of the Catechism.

Catechism of the Catholic Church

2263 The legitimate defense of persons and societies is not an exception to the prohibition against the murder of the innocent that constitutes intentional killing. "The act of self-defense can have a double effect: the preservation of one's own life; and the killing of the aggressor.... the one is intended, the other is not."

2264 Love toward oneself remains a fundamental principle of morality. Therefore it is legitimate to insist on respect for one's own right to life. Someone who defends his life is not guilty of murder even if he is forced to deal his aggressor a lethal blow:

If a man in self-defense uses more than necessary violence, it will be unlawful: whereas if he repels force with moderation, his defense will be lawful.... Nor is it necessary for salvation that a man omit the act of moderate self-defense to avoid killing the other man, since one is bound to take more care of one's own life than of another's.

2265 Legitimate defense can be not only a right but a grave duty for someone responsible for another's life. Preserving the common good requires rendering the unjust aggressor unable to inflict harm. To this end, those holding legitimate authority have the right to repel by armed force aggressors against the civil community entrusted to their charge.

Finally we come back to Mao Zedong who provided the title for my scribbling, and understood what it meant for the state to be armed, and the individual citizen to be disarmed. Without the 2nd Amendment none of the other Amendments matter. Free human beings may own firearms, slaves and subjects do not.
